How BPM Converts to Milliseconds
BPM to Milliseconds conversion is the fundamental mathematical operation underpinning all time-based audio processing. Because there are 60 seconds (60,000 milliseconds) in one minute, dividing 60,000 by your track's beats per minute (BPM) produces the exact duration of a single quarter-note beat in milliseconds.
Quarter Note (ms) = 60,000 ÷ BPM
// 2. Straight Subdivisions
Whole Note (1/1) = Quarter Note × 4
Half Note (1/2) = Quarter Note × 2
Eighth Note (1/8) = Quarter Note × 0.5
Sixteenth Note (1/16) = Quarter Note × 0.25
Thirty-Second (1/32) = Quarter Note × 0.125
// 3. Dotted Subdivisions (1.5× standard duration)
Dotted Quarter (ms) = Quarter Note × 1.5
Dotted Eighth (ms) = Eighth Note × 1.5 = Quarter Note × 0.75
// 4. Triplet Subdivisions (⅔ standard duration)
Quarter Triplet (ms) = Quarter Note × (2/3)
Eighth Triplet (ms) = Quarter Note × (1/3)

Where to Apply Millisecond Values in the Studio
- Compressor Attack & Release: Setting release to an 1/8th or 1/16th note ensures gain reduction recovers rhythmically before the next beat hits. Read our guide on Syncing Audio Effects to BPM.
- Analog & Tape Delays: Hardware echoes lacking MIDI clock sync can be manually dialed to exact ms values with our BPM Delay Calculator.
- Noise Gate Hold Times: Shape transient sustain on tom mics and gated snares.
- LFO Frequency in Hertz (Hz): Convert milliseconds to Hz via
Hz = 1000 ÷ msfor perfectly synchronized chorus, flanger, and tremolo sweeps.
Frequently Asked Questions
The duration of a quarter note in milliseconds is calculated as: 60,000 ÷ BPM. From there, divide by 2 for eighth notes, divide by 4 for sixteenth notes, multiply by 1.5 for dotted values, and multiply by 2/3 for triplets.
Engineers convert BPM to milliseconds to set non-synced hardware delays, pre-delays on reverb processors, compressor attack/release envelopes, noise gate hold times, and modulation LFO rates.
A dotted note lasts 1.5 times the duration of its straight counterpart. For example, a dotted eighth note is: (60,000 ÷ BPM ÷ 2) × 1.5.
A triplet note lasts two-thirds (2/3) of its straight counterpart. For example, an eighth-note triplet is: (60,000 ÷ BPM ÷ 2) × (2/3).
